Bee swarms are all part of beekeeping. Swarming happens when a colony divides, with the old queen leaving the hive with thousands of worker bees to find a new home.
After a few days of heavy rain, and with hives at peak population, a swarm is quite likely, but it’s something you really don’t like to see as a beekeeper. As soon as I heard the loud buzz in the garden, I knew what was happening and called on Master Beekeeper Nathaniel Lovell (my husband) to join me on the retrieval mission!
Thankfully, they landed on a low branch and we managed to catch them and introduce them to a new hive. Catching a swarm is one thing, but the real question is whether they decide to stay!
